IMPACT Club April Meeting Explored New Economic Systems & IP Innovations

Fernandina Beach, FL, April 15, 2024 — On Saturday, April 13, Goldwater Ventures' Innovative Minds Promoting Ambitious Cultural Transformation (IMPACT Club) held its monthly meeting. This club, created to inspire and support early-career public policy professionals, encourages critical discussions on contemporary global issues, specifically at the crossroads of technology, media, and cultural sustainability.

The April assembly showcased a compelling presentation by Cameron Benson C’24 and Kalif Robinson C’24, members of the SIG TEAM 6 Cohort. They expertly covered select topics essential to reimagining socio-economic models for social justice, resulting in a session that successfully combined insightful presentations with dynamic participant discussions.

A key part of the discussion was the potential of green and circular economies. Kalif Robinson highlighted the benefits of investing in renewable energy and stressed the necessity of reducing carbon emissions. He outlined the success of the circular economy in waste reduction and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions, using Culver City, California's transition to 100% renewable energy as an illustrative example. Robinson also touched upon the regulatory constraints and financial limitations that pose challenges to transitioning to a green economy. Importantly, he emphasized that these hurdles were not insurmountable, citing successful efforts in Brazil and the United States where job retraining, tax crediting, and other mitigating measures have facilitated the transition to more sustainable practices.

Counterpart Cameron Benson added depth to the conversation by providing both legal and functional definitions of the world's economic systems. He emphasized that most economies are hybrid systems. These structures can advantage or disadvantage certain societal groups. Benson led the group through a detailed exploration of the perilous effects of capitalism’s intellectual and real property regimes on indigenous, Black, and Latinx communities. This analysis particularly focused on issues related to land divestment, natural resource depletion, and uncompensated cultural contributions classified by our property regimes.

A. Prince Albert III, founder of Goldwater Ventures and the IMPACT Club, reinforced the importance of intellectual property rights in preserving cultural heritage. Prince advocated for the need for a specialized intellectual property category for traditional cultural expressions. Albert's advocacy extended to the inclusion of indigenous and folkloric knowledge in new intellectual property categories, promoting sustainable living practices often overlooked in status quo IP regimes.

The IMPACT Club intends to continue exploring these themes, with the ultimate goal of integrating more sustainable and equitable practices into public policy and corporate governance. Working together, the IMPACT Club members are reimagining solutions for a more just and sustainable world. Please stay connected for future publications, updates, and insights at the links below.
