Goldwater-assisted NFL Film Scores Four Emmy Nods



New York, NY, April 12, 2024—Goldwater Ventures, in collaboration with the National Football League (NFL) and the Gullah/Geechee Nation, has earned four Emmy nominations for its NFL360 short film "Chief Who Walked the Sea (Igbo Landing)." As The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences announced on April 9, the project highlights a significant cultural narrative that will compete at the 45th Annual Sports Emmy® Awards on May 21 at New York City's Lincoln Center’s Frederick P. Rose Hall.


The film premiered on the NFL's primetime channel on Tuesday, February 6. The episode tells the story of the iconic NFL star, Jim Brown. It was directed and produced by Nigerian-American filmmaker and former Georgia Tech football player Osahon Tongo, who is also an award-winning sports documentarian. Queen Quet, the Chieftess of the Gullah/Geechee Nation, provides a poetic narration highlighting Brown's Gullah/Geechee heritage on Saint Simons Island, GA, and his cultural and spiritual connection to the flying Africans at Igbo Landing. Queen Quet appeared alongside prominent community leaders, including A. Prince Albert III, the President of Goldwater Ventures.


Goldwater Ventures' cultural consultancy significantly contributed to the acclaimed episode, earning four Sports Emmy nominations by ensuring the narrative respects Afro-Indigenous heritage. The nominations for work’s storytelling brilliance, technical prowess, and innovative design span several categories, including:


  • Outstanding Short Feature: This nomination highlights the episode's ability to tell a compelling and impactful story within a concise format.

  • Outstanding Editing — Short Form: This nomination underscores the skillful editing that enhanced the narrative and emotional engagement. It is a nod to the behind-the-scenes work that creates a seamless viewing experience.

  • The Dick Schaap Writing Award — Short Form: This nomination acknowledges the episode's high-quality narrative structure and depth of content. It celebrates the writers who created a rich, engaging narrative that engaged viewers.

  • Outstanding Graphic Design — Specialty: This nomination applauds the creative use of visual design elements, which are pivotal in elevating the sports narrative. It recognizes the importance of visual aesthetics in storytelling.
